The cast of the movie was announced last year and includes Chris Pratt as Mario, with Charlie Day voicing his brother Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy, his love interest Princess Peach. The list continues with Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson voicing Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as the voice of Spike.

The project is a collaboration between Illumination and Nintendo, with Universal co-financing the project and distributing it in North America. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies) are directing the project, from a script by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2 and Minions: The Rise of Gru). Chris Meledandri, from Illumination, and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, who created Mario, are producing the movie.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released in theaters on April 7, 2023, after moving from its original December 21, 2022, date. As of right now, the movie won’t be facing much competition that month, with the only big movies coming up next being Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise on April 21, and then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5. It will open three weeks after Shazam! Fury of the Gods (March 17), two weeks after John Wick: Chapter 4 (March 24), and a week after Scream 6 (March 31). With that calendar in mind, it has the potential to do a lot of business if the marketing campaign is strong.
