‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ New Image Sees Natalie Portman in Full Costume
While audiences are still grappling with the mind-bending twists of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which debuted this weekend in theaters, the marketing for Thor: Love and Thunder has already kicked off.
Following up on last month’s teaser trailer, Empire has released a new image (see above) that sees the reunion between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster a.k.a. The Mighty Thor. Director Taika Waititi explains Jane’s return as what will trigger a dramatic journey for Thor:
“It’s been about eight years. She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindfuck for Thor.”
He then added that having Jane back was an idea that appeared naturally as he started to write the story:
“I didn’t know we were going to use the storyline of the Mighty Thor character until we started working out the actual story. I was writing and it was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be kind of cool to bring Jane back into the storyline?’”
And having her as part of Thor’s journey, both in the character’s arc and the plot, was what most appealed to him about it:
“You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment. You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.”
About Natalie Portman, the director finally expressed everyone’s feelings, many years later, out loud. She was vastly underused in the first two films:
“Natalie’s really funny in real life. She’s kind of goofy and has got a great sense of humour, and I don’t think that was exploited enough in the first films.”
Shortly after the release of the teaser trailer, Portman also posted a teaser poster on her Instagram account that focused on The Mighty Thor instead of Hemsworth’s Thor. Thor’s poster had come out the day before with the tagline “The One and the Only”, while Jane’s poster read: “The One Is Not the Only”. Check them out below:
Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in theaters on July 8.
Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
