‘Moon Knight’ Cast and Crew Say Season 2 Is Not Guaranteed Yet

Shortly after the season (series?) finale of Moon Knight, the cast and crew went on record on several interviews with different outlets to say there are no concrete plans for a second season at the moment.

The sixth episode was directed by Mohamed Diab, and saw the conclusion of Marc/Steven’s journey while setting up an interesting new beginning with the introduction of Jake Lockley. Diab told Variety that, while he doesn’t know for sure, he thinks Moon Knight is here to stay. He said:

“If you ask me, I would tell you that ‘Moon Knight’ is here to stay. He’s an interesting character. If you are Marvel, I think the smart business decision is to keep him. The only thing is, Marvel is not traditional. If you succeed, it doesn’t mean you’re gonna get a Season 2. By the way, I’m kept in the dark. I have no clue. I’m just thinking as a businessman right now. But I think they’re going to stay. Maybe it’s going to be a film. Maybe it’s going to be a journey like what happened with ‘WandaVision.’ I wish one day, if there is an expansion, I would be a part of it. We ended in a way that feels like a beginning. You see Mark and Steven becoming a new dynamic, the two of them in one body. We see Jake. You see the Scarlet Scarab, who could be a superhero or not. Very interesting stuff.”

The Jake Lockley reveal at the end definitely felt like a “To be continued…” type of ending, and that is exactly how producer Grant Curtis saw it. As he told Entertainment Weekly:

“We realized early on in the development process, led by the great Jeremy Slater, that we had an embarrassment of riches. We had Marc Spector, we had Steven Grant, we had Jake Lockley, we had Arthur Harrow, we had Layla El-Faouly, we had Khonshu, we had Ammit. It really came down to the fact that [we wanted] to tell Marc’s most intimate, engaging journey. It really became a two-hander between Marc Spector and Steven Grant. That didn’t leave Jake out of the picture, because we kind of thread Jake Lockley throughout, from episode 1 and beyond. But it really became evident that the best place to put him was at the end and make that the tag and [set up] the new journey ahead at the end of episode 6.”

Curtis was also asked by EW where we might see Moon Knight next, and he, much like Diab, had no idea:

“I can take my computer down to Kevin’s office, and you can ask Kevin! I sincerely don’t know. But I will say this: I like where we leave Marc Spector and Steven Grant and Jake Lockley because Oscar created such an engaging character. People want to see more of him. I think because of where we left the character, he could merge nicely into the MCU, wherever Kevin may want to put him. In that aspect, I’m a fan, and I’ll buy a ticket. But I do not know! Kevin knows all.”

Oscar Isaac, however, is saying for now that this might be the end of the run. This was the story he wanted to tell, and he’s satisfied with it. As he said in an interview with Radio Times, there are no official plans to continue:

“You know, I think we approached it as ‘this is the story’. And let’s just put everything out on the table on this story. There’s definitely no official plans to continue it. I think it would depend on what the story is.”

However, that doesn’t mean he won’t change his mind in the future, should the story be right, as he then added:

“That being said, I love being Steven. I just love it. It’s just like, physically, it’s so much fun to be him.

So, you know, if there was a story that really made sense, I’d be happy to be part of it.”

Diab also posted on Twitter a farewell picture of the last Zoom meeting the Moon Knight team had:

The team might be reunited sooner rather than later, as Disney Plus might very well make an Emmys push for the show and Oscar Isaac. It will be key, too, whether they decide to submit the show for the category of Best Limited Series, where they would have a better chance at getting nominated (as would Oscar Isaac for Best Actor in a Limited Series).

Variety pointed out in a piece recently that a tweet from Marvel Studios, in which they promoted the sixth episode as the “season finale” instead of the “series finale”, might turn out to be troubling for Moon Knight‘s chances at the Emmys. However, Big Little Lies proved a few years ago that one can get nominated in that category and still get renewed for a second season.
