‘True Detective’ Back for Fourth Season, Barry Jenkins and Issa López Producing

True Detective S1

It was just a matter of time, as HBO isn’t willing to close down the investigation just yet. True Detective is back.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that original series creator Nic Pizzolatto won’t return, since he parted ways with HBO after three seasons of the hit crime drama series. Instead, Issa López (Vuelven, La Boda de Valentina) has been tapped to pen new scripts, direct at least the pilot episode, and executive produce the new iteration of the show, tentatively titled True Detective: Night Country.

López will be joined by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, untitled The Lion King prequel), who is attached to exec produce the new season too — he signed an overall deal with HBO last April. Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also expected to serve as executive producers, a role they kept throughout the three previous seasons. Pizzolatto will likely be credited as well in spite of his absence.

The news of the True Detective revival “comes as no surprise,” according to THR, as the powers that be at HBO had been toying around with a number of ideas for the last few years. Moreover, HBO and HBO Max boss Casey Bloys said in February that they were actively developing some of those pitches.

If plans have panned out, renowned female actor Jodie Foster could be one of the leads in Night Country, which is rumored to take place in an Alaskan/Artic setting. The Illuminerdi first broke the news regarding Foster’s potential involvement, as well as brief details about the other lead character of the show: Navarro, “an Indigenous female in her 40’s who is established in her career.”

So far, it seems like those reports, which also talked about Issa López’s participation and mentioned HBO was looking to start shooting in the fall, were right on the money. Stay tuned for definitive casting news in the coming months.
