‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ Official Trailer Is Full of Magic

Warner Bros. just released the second official trailer for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

The near-three-minute video features some of the most astonishing magic tricks the franchise has given us so far, which could indicate that they are finally exploring the full potential of the Wizarding World. Check it out below:

Besides all the magic tricks and visual effects extravaganza, the trailer is already hinting at several key moments in the movie, and in the Wizarding World’s history as well. Ezra Miller’s character continues to be a big mystery, but his allegiances are clearer than ever with this trailer. We also explore a bit further Dumbledore giving a magic wand to a muggle, something that was already seen in the previous trailer. And of course, we have the big meeting between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. In the convoluted canon of the movies, which is no longer the same as the one from the books, this takes place after the two of them split up.

In the books, the two had a very close friend relationship in their younger years, before Grindelwald embraced the dark ways and became a Dark Wizard. While this was never explored in the books, it has been hinted at in the new movies that Dumbledore is a homosexual man, with J. K. Rowling fully confirming it in an interview. It’s possible they will explore this further in the new movie, especially as he prepares for the big duel against his old friend.

There is a duel between the two seen in the trailer (and in the image above), but it is unlikely this is the Big Duel, the one that is referenced in the Harry Potter books as nothing short of redefining the century for wizards worldwide, and ended with Grindelwald in prison. After all, this is still the third movie out of the planned five-movie-arc, and they will probably want to keep the big showdown for a later point.

The new movie is apparently embracing the full potential of the original pitch of a five-movie-arc, shifting from the focus on the “Fantastic Beasts” the script had in the first movie and becoming a full-on Harry Potter prequel instead. Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander has taken the backseat and is letting Jude Law’s Dumbledore take co-protagonist duties. Even the poster of the movie (see below) relegates him to a member of the ensemble, versus the previous two posters with Redmayne at the forefront.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will bow in theaters on April 15th.
