CODA winning definitely represents a big push for the movie as the Oscars approach. With DGA and PGA Awards winners still to be announced (March 12th), the Best Picture race now seems to be all about CODA vs. The Power of the Dog, the latter of which still has the advantage of scoring 12 nominations. Of course, this past decade is filled with counterexamples that would rule out this as a reason why The Power of the Dog could take the big prize at the end of March — going no further, in 2020, Joker had the most amount of nominations (11) and wasn’t even a contender for Best Picture. The one everyone thought would take the statue, 1917, with a total of 10 nominations, had to watch Parasite, with only four, bag it home.

La La Land, in 2017, scored a record of 14 nominations, and famously had to hand its Best Picture statue to Moonlight‘s producers. Since 2010, there have been a total of five movies that won the Best Ensemble category at the SAG Awards and then went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. This is not the most relevant Guild Awards to predict Best Picture, but it does give us some hints. If The Power of the Dog had been nominated and lost to CODA, this would be a different conversation. However, Belfast is another big horse in the race for Best Picture, and today, it has lost some ground to CODA.

CODA wins big at SAG Awards

Another big upset on Sunday was Jessica Chastain winning Best Actress, which is currently one of the most unpredictable categories, especially after the Guild did not nominate the actress that was thought to be the frontrunner at the time: Kristen Stewart. She has now lost a lot of steam, and we could be looking at Nicole Kidman as this year’s winner of the Oscar. However, we must not rule out Chastain, who many people thought would not even be nominated.

And as far as Best Supporting Actress goes, this is Ariana DeBose’s award to lose at this point. She has no real competition, and she will most likely be the second actress in history to win an Oscar for playing Anita in West Side Story — both her and Rita Moreno will join the duos of Robert DeNiro/Marlon Brando and Joaquin Phoenix/Heath Ledger of actors winning an Oscar for playing the same role in two different movies.

Moving to the male side of things, Will Smith is another lock for the Oscars, with little to no competition to get the Best Actor award. The supporting actor category is more interesting now with Kotsur’s win, as it was previously leaning towards Kodi Smit-McPhee. This could already give us a hint during Oscar night of what to expect from Best Picture, as it will be another CODA vs. The Power of the Dog battle.

Finally, on the TV side, Succession a.k.a. the best show on television right now, took home the big prize of Best Ensemble, but that didn’t stop Squid Game from receiving lots of love from the actor’s guild, winning the two Best Actor/Actress awards plus the Best Stunt Ensemble trophy.

Leaving entertainment for a minute, the big presence of the night was the war in Ukraine, with actors like Michael Keaton, Jessica Chastain, or Brian Cox asking for everyone to join in solidarity towards the Eastern European country.

The Oscars will take place on March 27th. Stay tuned for more coverage on that front.
