WB Shakes Up Their Release Schedule, Delays ‘The Batman’

The Batman

Matt Reeves’ The Batman will now be released on October 1, 2021.

The coronavirus crisis is not only affecting the movies that are being released this year, but also the movies that were supposed to be shooting in 2020. On the heels of The Batman halting production last month for what was supposed to be two weeks and has now turned into an indefinite hold, the studio has decided to push back the delay of the film four months, according to Variety.

The movie was supposed to come out on June 25, 2021, but has now been delayed until October 1, 2021. However, this is not the only movie that has seen its release date change today. The Many Saints of Newark, the Sopranos prequel that was set to come out on September 25, 2020, will now debut on March 12, 2021.

However, over at the DC quarters, The Batman is not the only movie to see its release date changed. Shazam 2, which is supposed to start shooting this calendar year, has been pushed back seven months, from April 1, 2022, to November 4, 2022. And also, in what must be the most surprising piece of news in the entire year, the studio has moved up one month the release date of The Flash. They are now saying that the movie will debut on June 2, 2022, and not on July 1 of that year, as was previously stated.

Honestly, I will have to wait until June 3, 2022, to be 100% sure that this movie is going to happen. It is unclear to me why they have made this move on The Flash, but the Shazam 2 part is pretty obvious. They had planned to start shooting in the second half of the year, and just in case they are not able to, they are pushing the release date now. They might be even thinking about starting in early 2021. Shazam 2 might actually set a new record for the farthest movie release date affected by the coronavirus crisis.

It must be noted that as of the writing of this piece, the studio has not yet delayed Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which is supposed to come out on July 17, 2020. Obviously, it is unclear whether they will be able to hit that date, but both the studio and the filmmaker are determined to hold on to it as long as possible. Also, Wonder Woman 1984 is still set to come out on August 14, 2020.

The Batman is being directed by Matt Reeves from a script written by himself and Mattson Tomlin. It stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, with Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Jon Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, among others.
