‘Toy Story 4’ Trailer: Of Road Trips and Unexpected Reunions

Toy Story 4
The official trailer for Toy Story 4 has arrived, revealing how one “not-quite-a-toy” toy’s existential crisis leads Woody and his friends on an adventure that takes them to an antique shop to reunite with a long-lost old friend, and a carnival where they meet plenty of new friends.

The fourth Toy Story film reunites audiences with Bonnie, the little girl who owns most of Andy’s old toys after he poignantly passed the torch over to the young girl after he had outgrown them. Set not that long after the toys are in her custody, they find that she’s taken a liking to an art project that she made at school: Forky. Forky, believing himself to be garbage and not a plaything, tries to escape, and as Woody chases him, they cross paths with a friend that Woody hasn’t seen in a long time: Bo Peep.

Pixar released a new poster for the film earlier today:

Shortly afterward, they dropped the full trailer on us:

As someone who felt that Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to this franchise and that a fourth film wasn’t necessary, I have to say that it looks like Pixar are putting a lot of thought into this new movie, and that this new adventure (which may or may not be the last one) will more than justify its own existence with what appears to be a funny, poignant story about identity and belonging. The movie should help Disney cement their dominance of the box office this year, along with their acquisition of Fox.

The film’s official premise is as follows:

“Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.”

Toy Story 4 will open on June 21, 2019.
