‘Black Widow’ Casting Rumors Involve Female Lead and Villain

Black Widow
Since Black Widow is set to start filming, casting on the project is quietly underway as Marvel seek to put development on their Phase 4 projects into high gear, even as they’re in the midst of putting the promotional campaign for Avengers: Endgame in focus, and are keeping quiet about their future plans. At least three major roles are seeking actors, with a shortlist for some of the roles available.

According to That Hashtag ShowHarry Potter actress Emma Watson is apparently seen as the favorite for a major role involving “[a] kick-ass female [James] Bond”, which naturally indicates that the role will be physically-demanding and one that will be similar to Scarlett Johansson. Watson seems likely to get the part, given that her name has apparently appeared frequently in discussions involving Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios Vice President of Production and Development, and Black Widow director Cate Shortland. Other actresses known to be in the running for the role include Alice Englert, Dar Zuzovsky, and Florence Pugh, though there are apparently other actresses not on this list that are in consideration.

But that’s not all. THS also has another piece detailing the front-runner for the villain role: Andre Holland of Moonlight fame is likely to play the film’s antagonist. The role in question was looking for an African-British or African actor, and although Holland is African-American, though it appears as though the actor’s natural accent is not a factor in deciding who plays the character. In addition, an older male role and an older female role are being cast with an alleged connection to this villain. Sebastian Koch and Alec Bladwin are in the running for the former, while Rachel Weisz is in the running for the latter. Lastly, THS also made mention of a young actress of color being considered, with candidates including Storm Reid, Isabela Moner, Camila Mendes, and Hannah Quinlivan. A word of warning is that THS aren’t sure what characters these roles correspond to, as Marvel are keeping that as secretive as humanly possible.

Black Widow is in development at Marvel Studios, and although no date has been scheduled, the movie is most likely seeking Marvel’s tentative May 1, 2020 release date.
