‘Black Adam’ Script May Feature ‘Justice Society’ Characters

Black Adam
The Black Adam project at DC Films and New Line may actually be a Justice Society of America movie in disguise, with Dwayne Johnson’s eponymous Teth-Adam being the lead character. According to a new report, three characters set to join the dark wielder of Shazam’s powers are Stargirl, Atom Smasher, and Hawkman.

That Hashtag Show has revealed that Adam Szytkiel’s latest crack at the Black Adam movie’s script seems to be taking influence from Geoff Johns’s run on the comic back in 2004. Instead of being a total standalone, the movie looks like it will be a story involving the Justice Society. And it seems like there will be other DC characters involved, as these are only three additions to the cast that the writer knew about:

The above lineup – made up of Eclipso, Nemesis, Black Adam, Northwind, Brainwave, and Atom Smasher – were all part of a Justice Society of America story arc known as Black Reign, a story arc about the eponymous group of disillusioned heroes and well-intentioned anti-heroes/villains who saw the Justice Society’s methods as too soft, and that killing criminals was a necessary evil. If the report is accurate, then that means that Black Adam and Atom Smasher will be on the same side of the conflict, while Hawkman and Stargirl will represent the Justice Society.

Stargirl’s inclusion on this list is of interest, considering that she’s got her own show in development for the DC Universe platform. It seems as though the infamous decisions to embargo certain characters from appearing in other media may be lifting, as she would be one of the few DC characters to be active on both television and film at the same time. There have also been occasional whispers that DC are interested in developing Hawkman and/or Hawkgirl on the big screen, and using this film as a launching point for the character may be a smart move.

How DC plan on approaching this story seems to be of great interest, considering that Black Adam will be the protagonist of this film. Hawkman is clearly the good guy in this situation, so getting audience to root for Teth-Adam for reasons that don’t involve Dwayne Johnson’s charisma is something that should be interesting to see. The movie itself doesn’t seem like it’ll be the type to pull punches, so while DC Films are moving in a lighter direction, this may be one of the more brutal PG-13 movies that the studio puts out.

Black Adam is in development at DC Films. Should all things go as planned, production is set to begin in March 2020 as the studio looks for a director on the project.
