‘Shazam!’ Trailer Arrives in Time for ‘Captain Marvel’
Long ago, Fawcett Comics published Captain Marvel comic books, which told the story of a young boy who gained the powers of a God upon saying magic word. After legal disputes with DC Comics, the company acquired their competitor and eventually lost the trademark to the name (which was later changed to Shazam), which Marvel then acquired and used for their own superhero and his many successors. Now, the renamed hero’s second trailer for his movie, Shazam!, will arrive in front of Captain Marvel.
Set to portray a lighter, goofier side of the multifaceted DC Universe, Shazam! is effectively described as “Tom Hanks’s Big, but with superpowers” as orphan Billy Batson is transformed into an adult with peak physical conditioning and a host of magical abilities, most of which revolve around lightning. However, he retains the mind of his 14-year-old self, meaning that the hero is inevitably a goofball still getting into the swing of things. You can take a look at it below:
While the initial trailer only gave us a glimpse at the villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, he’s explored in greater detail here as a true threat and someone that Batson has to get serious about in order to defeat, as even with abilities on par with Superman’s, Shazam quickly learns that that his evil counterpart is no pushover. There’s also a humorous scene showing that the various DC characters within this universe have their own merchandise, which is fittingly meta in a movie about a guy trying to figure out how this superheroics thing works.
The film’s premise is as follows:
Billy Batson is a streetwise 14-year-old who can magically transform into the adult superhero Shazam simply by shouting out one word. His newfound powers soon get put to the test when he squares off against the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
Shazam! hits theaters on April 5 2019.
