Box Office Weekend – ‘Dragon’ Repeats as Oscar Winners and Nominees See a Bump

Box Office
This weekend at the box office, the third and final How to Train Your Dragon film continued to hold its #1 spot at the box office. Meanwhile, award-winners saw a boost in business.

Thanks to a strong Saturday box office performance, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World managed to best Tyler Perry’s (supposedly) final film in his Madea series. The movie is now a day or two from crossing the big $100M milestone. Thanks to a strong performance overseas, The Hidden World has topped the original’s international box office total, and there’s still plenty of gas left in the tank. Meanwhile, Alita: Battle Angel is approaching the break-even point (said to be around $400M by Fox) at the global box office, and it ought to get there by next weekend or shortly after. If Avatar 2 delivers at Disney-Fox, then James Cameron might just be able to haggle his way toward ensuring that the two sequels that he was hoping to make actually happen. Fingers crossed.

This being the weekend after the Oscars were awarded to their winners, Green Book, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, The FavouriteFree Solo, and Mary Poppins Returns all saw increases in box office performance. While only two of these movies (Green Book and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in case you’re wondering) are on the list below, the boosts they got were pretty substantial, for the most part. The only nominees that did not receive some kind of Oscar bump were Ralph Breaks the InternetVice, Cold War, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Never Look Away.

Next weekend sees the arrival of Captain Marvel in what should be a big opening (with three-day estimates ranging anywhere from $100M to $180M) that should help kick a slow box office for 2019 into high gear. The first two months of this year have been seen as a pretty slow start, given that the current total for 2019 has been significantly behind the totals for all annual box office performances through February in the past six years.
