‘Live Die Repeat’ Sequel Moving Forward at Warner Bros.

Edge of Tomorrow Live Die Repeat
After six years of going nowhere, Warner Bros. are looking to move forward with a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, or Live Die Repeat as it’s also known. The studio wants Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt back to team up against an alien horde in a self-contained sequel that helps to answer some lingering questions that fans of the first had about the first film, especially with the somewhat-confusing ending.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. are finally moving forward with a sequel to the cult classic with the crew of the first film back for another loop. Director Doug Liman was open to doing a sequel back in 2016, but due to scheduling complications between him and the two leads, that wasn’t particularly feasible. Now, it seems like Liman, Cruise, and Blunt are open to doing another movie the moment they have a script that they all like. Liman is set to co-write the script with Matthew Robinson, who previously worked on The Invention of Lying.

Based on All You Need is Kill, a Light Novel (read: a Japanese novella with manga-like illustrations included in the book) by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Live Die Repeat was an American reimagining of the work’s central concept: during a battle with an extraterrestrial menace, one public relations office is drafted into battle as a soldier facing an alien menace. Upon dying in a pool of alien blood, he finds himself back to where he was a day before the battle that killed him. While constantly reliving (and learning from) the battle, he discovers that another, far more experienced and famous soldier, also possessed that ability and used it to win a decisive battle, and the two must work together to stop the alien menace once and for all.

While Live Die Repeat had a disappointing opening at the box office in spite of rave reviews,  strong word-of-mouth led to the tile being an incredibly leggy release and crossing $100M domestically, which when combined with a strong international performance and good post-theatrical revenue pushed the movie past the break-even point and into modest profitability. While Cruise is as big a star as ever, Blunt’s profile has increased, and with the right marketing, the sequel to Live Die Repeat could learn from its predecessor and potentially be a breakout sequel.

The sequel to Live Die Repeat is in development, with no production start date or release date announced.
