A ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ Sequel is Already Being Developed

Detective Pikachu
Three months ahead of the release of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and Legendary Pictures have officially greenlit the development of a sequel. The potential breakout hit based on the popular Nintendo franchise is managing to get a lot of buzz in spite of the stigma associated with feature film adaptations of video games.

According to The Wrap, Legendary Pictures have already commissioned 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel to begin work on a script to this May’s Detective Pikachu. Uziel worked on the script to Paramount’s adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog as well, so he likely knows his stuff as far as video games are concerned.

Recent rumors indicated that audiences responded incredibly well to the movie, and after a largely-positive response to the first trailer, Warner Bros. have to be confident in the film that Legendary Pictures developed for them. The movie was originally set to be distributed by Universal, but that ship sailed after the Comcast-owned company was not able to successfully manage Legendary and the two parted ways.

This is clearly a big loss for Universal and a big win for Warner Bros., as the movie looks like it’s not only going to be the first video game movie to be a true hit across the field, but also the first video game movie with a shot of clearing $1B. As long as the film makes money in the United States, the international appeal of the picture should carry it to an unprecedented level of success.

The film’s premise is as follows:

A young man joins forces with Detective Pikachu to unravel the mystery behind his father’s disappearance. Chasing clues through the streets of Ryme City, the dynamic duo soon discover a devious plot that poses a threat to the Pokémon universe.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released on May 10, 2019.
