‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ Trailer Brings Pocket Monsters to Life

Pokémon
The first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu has arrived, and it’s… Surprisingly pretty great, from the looks of things. In this story, a former Pokémon trainer ends up teaming up with a Pikachu that has a knack for solving crimes. The duo can somehow comprehend one another (as Pokémon are usually known to repeat syllables of their names in conversation as opposed to speaking in a tongue that people can understand), allowing the pair to team up to look for the ex-trainer’s father, a police officer who has gone missing under mysterious circumstances.

The new trailer introduces audiences to a world where Pokémon and people live alongside one another in a world closer to our own than the ones presented in the game. Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu whenever we humans can understand him, whereas original Pikachu voice actress Ikue Ōtani voices the character whenever he’s doing standard “Pokémon talk”. Justice Smith and Ken Watanabe are among the live-action actors seen in the film, whereas Bill Nighy is the other big name to appear in the movie in an undisclosed role. (Rumors are going around that Mewtwo is in the movie, just as he is in the game, and Nighy might be a natural fit if that’s the character he’s playing.)

The film is based upon the Pokémon spin-off game of the same name, which puts a detective-based spin upon the world of pocket monsters instead of opting for the turn-based RPG elements that made the series so well-known. The focus is not to catch them all, it seems, but to take a deeper look at the setting with a different lens. The movie is directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) and written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Letterman. You can view the trailer below:
