‘The Flash’ Pushed Back to 2021 Due to Scheduling Conflicts

The Flash
Due to his commitment with the Fantastic Beasts film series, Ezra Miller’s The Flash won’t start filming until late 2019 in order to make a 2021 release window.

Variety reports that The Flash is seeing another pushback in the form of additional rewrites to the script and scheduling conflicts from leads Ezra Miller and Kiersey Clemons (the latter of whom will be busy with Disney’s Lady and the Tramp remake). The film was originally expected to get started in February or March of 2019, but that’s out of the question now. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who are involved with writing and directing the movie, are still attached and do not have any intention of leaving the project.

The Flash, as a project, has had quite a turbulent history at Warner Brothers. Originally slated for a 2018 release date from Seth Grahame-Smith (who co-wrote the screenplay) in his intended directorial debut, the director’s seat was swapped out with Dope director Rick Famiyuwa before he left due to unspecified creative differences over the direction of the story. For a time, there were indications that DC would restructure the movie into a Flashpoint adaptation (including a title reveal at the San Diego Comic Con), plans changed after Justice League underperformed and it was determined that the company needed to focus on standalones for the time being.

It seems like there’s potentially a chance that, by the time The Flash is actually released, The CW’s show will end its run, which would be advantageous to the big-budget movie version from both a creative and financial standpoint. The same might not be said for Supergirl, who also has a movie in the pipeline at DC Films and is also in the midst of her own series on The CW. But the fact that DC seem to be willing to take time on projects instead of trying to rush them speak well for their new approach, as it means that new films are unlikely to run into the kind of issues that plagued the likes of Suicide Squad and Justice League.

The Flash is in development at Warner Bros. and DC Films for a 2021 release window.
