CW’s Arrowverse Crossover Is Doing Elseworlds

Arrowverse Elseworlds poster
CW have released a new poster teasing Elseworlds, this year’s big Arrowverse crossover between Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, and it’s going to get fans seriously hyped.

The poster shows Oliver Queen and Barry Allen wearing each other’s suits, with the Elseworlds logo at the bottom.

The reveal of the crossover’s title explains a lot of things. Fans had long been wondering how Batwoman would suddenly be introduced to the Arrowverse, assuming that she would likely be introduced as a hero from another Earth, like how Supergirl was introduced.

Then earlier this week, Stephen Amell posted a behind-the-scenes photo showing Tyler Hoechlin wearing Superman’s black suit.

Fans had been wondering what it meant for the crossover, but now we have confirmation that it’s a part of an Elseworlds story in the Arrowverse.

For anyone not familiar with Elseworlds, it is the name of a classic branch of DC comics that explore alternate realities in the DC universe. Often the stories depict ones much darker than in the mainline comics, creating classic ‘what if’ tales like Superman: Red Son, Kingdom Come, and The Dark Knight Returns.

Bringing Elseworlds to the Arrowverse gives us a chance to see these ‘what if’ stories play out on the small screen. Seeing as there’s never been any mention of Batwoman in the Arrowverse before, it would seem that Batwoman is coming from an alternate reality where things have gotten so bad in Gotham that Ruby Rose’s character has felt it necessary to don the suit and fight crime.

The black Superman costume is likely related to another alternate reality where Clark didn’t crash in Kansas and wasn’t raised by the Kents. Perhaps this is CW’s way of borrowing from his Red Son story arc, or perhaps they’re doing something inspired from Death of Superman, in which the black suit makes its debut.

But back to the poster, where all this speculation started. Presumably, we will get to see alternate realities where Oliver Queen gets struck by lightning and becomes The Flash. We might also see a reality where Barry Allen gets stranded on Lian Yu and becomes the Green Arrow.

This huge reveal almost threatens to bury the news that Lois Lane will also be appearing in this year’s crossover, with casting expected to start soon. It’s also been reported that The Monitor will be appearing in the crossover, to be played by LaMonica Garrett.

Right now, it’s unclear exactly how the two characters will factor into the Elseworlds event, though perhaps The Monitor could be the key when it comes to bringing these alternate realities together.

All these details are still up in the air, but if there’s one thing we have learned from this poster, it’s that Stephen Amell really knows how to rock The Flash suit. Are you excited that this year’s Arrowverse crossover is doing Elseworlds? Let us know in the comments.
