ABC Commits to New Marvel Series Starring Female Superheroes

Marvel
Following yesterday’s announcement that Loki and Scarlet Witch are heading to the Disney streaming service, ABC have given a production commitment to a new Marvel superhero series from Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg.

Details about the series are currently scarce, but Deadline has confirmed that it will be about “female characters with superpowers,” and will be based on “lesser-known Marvel characters.” That certainly opens the door to a wide range of characters in the Marvel Universe. For their part, Deadline speculate that the series may be based on comics such as A-Force, Lady Liberators, and Fearless Defenders.

She-Hulk could be possible fan favorite choice, though with the Hulk movie rights tied up with Universal I’m not sure where the TV rights currently sit for that character. However, using her in an A-Force series could be a possible loop hole in the Universal deal, similar to Hulk appearing in Avengers.

In addition to DC Films’ Wonder Woman, Heinberg has written for several shows on ABC, and served as the co-creator and showrunner of The Catch. He has also written numerous comics for both DC and Marvel.

The series will be executive produced by Heinberg and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb, and will be the fourth Marvel series from ABC following Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Inhumans.

Whilst it’s too early to be sure, it is likely that the series will premiere next fall as part of the new TV season. If that’s the case then we should expect to hear more details soon.
