Karl Urban is Confident Star Trek 4 Will Go Ahead

Karl Urban believes that the much anticipated Star Trek 4 will still happen, despite recent controversial news hindering its development.

The project has been stuck in limbo for weeks now, since news broke that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth may not return to their roles due to contract disputes.

Fans have been wondering if the sequel will go ahead at all, but Karl Urban, who plays Dr. Leonard McCoy in the rebooted films, is keeping positive.

Speaking at a panel at Trekonderoga, the annual Star Trek convention, Urban said: ‘Hopefully, we get back to another movie, or two of them. We are just sort of waiting on negotiations. I’m confident we will.’

Interestingly, Urban also confirmed that Pine wants to return as Captain Kirk, despite his contract disputes with Paramount. ‘For a movie that cost what it cost to make, the profit margins aren’t that great and so particularly Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine have subsequently done big movies, and their quotes have gone up and so I am pretty confident though that Paramount and those guys, they will figure it out. Because I know Chris. We were all in touch recently and everybody wants to do it and make it happen. So, if Paramount is willing there will be a way to make it happen. So, fingers crossed.’

Not only is the actor close with Chris Pine, but he’s close with all of the main cast after filming Star Trek Beyond, as they bonded while filming in Vancouver. ‘When we were in Vancouver we didn’t know anyone else, so we would hang out with each other and just had a blast. We really kinda grew tight, as a group … we actually feel like a tight-knit unit and a family.’

Urban seemed to be more concerned with the story of the fourth Trek film. It’s well known that the actor almost didn’t return for Beyond, after claiming he was unhappy with the lack of development for his character in Into Darkness.

‘I just want to be sure if we do another one that it is good,’ he explained. ‘I was pretty happy with Beyond, after the first two, and just want to make sure we push the envelope and develop these characters and take it somewhere new. That would be my biggest concern. What’s the story? Is it a story worth telling?’
