Sir Patrick Stewart to Return as Jean-Luc Picard

In an unexpected surprise, it appears Sir Patrick Stewart will be playing Jean-Luc Picard once again in the near future.

The legendary actor announced out of the blue that he will be returning to Star Trek via a statement posted on his Twitter account.

While he reveals almost no details on the project other than the character he will be playing, Stewart claimed it is ‘an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning as Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions with him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.’

His statement certainly suggests that we will be seeing brand new stories set after The Next Generation period, as he reveals he is ready to return ‘ to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he may shine on these often very dark times.’

He ends the statement by saying he is ‘looking forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.’

While it says a lot that the veteran actor’s decision to return to the character after 16 year absence was greatly influenced by the world’s current political climate, Star Trek fans who have been disappointed in the last two films will no doubt be delighted to see the classic character return in a brand new story.

However, it would appear that Picard will not be returning on the big screen. While there is no confirmation yet, Stewart’s decision to tag CBS Access in his tweet suggests that this will be a new TV series for fans to enjoy.

Fans who dislike the more action-oriented approach to recent Star Trek projects can now look forward to a return from the halcyon days of the franchise. For more news on the new Star Trek with Jean-Luc Picard, stay tuned to MNN.
