What We Learned About ‘Venom’ at Comic-Con

Venom
Venom has come to the San Diego Comic-Con. Here’s what we were able to learn about the superhero movie at Sony’s big presentation.

The Symbiotes Are Still Aliens

The movie’s big villain, Carlton Drake, is an executive who believes that space exploration is necessary for humanity’s continued survival. Using his resources, he’s somehow able to retrieve sentient life forms back to Earth – the Symbiotes. (So it doesn’t seem like they’ll be going with the “man-made protoplasm” explanation that the Ultimate Marvel comics went with.)

Venom Will Fight Riot

Drake wants to try to control the Symbiotes in the hopes that they can advance human evolution, and he does so by unethical means, putting innocent people at risk. So naturally, he ends up becoming a test subject himself and transforms into Riot, a giant grey human-symbiote hybrid which Venom will fight. (From the sound of things in the trailer, a fully-transformed Venom will appear in several fight scenes.)

Venom Doesn’t Have The White Spider Logo On His Chest, But There’s Something Like It

Since this iteration of Venom doesn’t have anything to do with Spider-Man as far as the origin goes, it only makes sense that there’s not a giant white Spider-Symbol on the anti-hero’s chest. However, there is a nod to it: there are multiple white veins on Venom’s body, including some that converge at the center of his chest.

Tom Hardy Played Venom For His Son

One thing Tom Hardy noted is that, aside from the character design, he wanted to play Venom simply because his son was a fan of superheroes, and he liked Venom. So Dad Hardy decided to play a superhero so Hardy Junior could have something to brag about on the playground. (Although, if the film is R-rated, then one has to wonder what Hardy’s willing to expose his son to.)

Spider-Man Is Not In The Movie, But A Crossover Could Happen Eventually

And no, that’s not Sony being clever to try to mask some kind of Peter Parker cameo (even though, with Avengers: Infinity War in mind, that wouldn’t make a ton of sense to begin with). Venom is a standalone that’s just about that character. The studio hints that they’re hopeful for an eventual crossover (whether it involves Tom Holland’s version of Spidey, who exists in a separate continuity, or not), but don’t hold your breath.

Venom will be released on October 5, 2018.
