What We Learned About ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ at Comic-Con

Miles Morales will make his debut in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Here’s what Sony had to say about the first feature-length animated Spider-Man movie at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Phil Lord And Chris Miller Wanted To Do A Miles Morales Story

The writing team explained that the key reason they wanted to commit to an animated film would be to tell Miles Morales’s story, which so far hasn’t been done in a movie. Both describe themselves as fans of the character (voiced by Shamiek Moore), who was introduced back in 2011 in the Ultimate Marvel line of comics.

Peter Parker Is At A Crossroads

At 40 years old, Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) is unsure of whether or not he’s willing to carry the burden of being Spider-Man alone, or if at all. His back is killing him, for one thing. But he recognizes that the world needs Spider-Man, which is why he wants to help Miles figure out what kind of hero he needs to be (even if he doesn’t want to play the role of mentor).

Miles Morales, Guardian Of The Multiverse

Miles is put into a high-pressure situation where it turns out that he’s the key to saving multiple universes, so he has to learn a lot on the fly from a variety of other versions of Spider-Man throughout all realities. How he ends up there and what the threat is, Sony didn’t make clear at this time.

The Peter Parker We Meet Is From A Different Universe Than Miles Morales

There’s a reason for that: because the Peter Parker that lived in Miles’ home universe died fighting crime. True to the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, Miles didn’t take up the title of Spider-Man until after Peter sacrificed his life to save New York City. Meeting his hero comes as a bit of a shock to him, especially since he’s not who he expected, alternate universe or not.

Spider-Gwen

This version of Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) is the most capable person in the room at any given moment, and she won’t let you forget it. But what’s also worth noting is that she ends up bonding with both Peter and Miles, as the three of them have faced significant personal trials in their own respective universes.

The Other Spiders Joining The Adventure

There are also other alternate universe Spider-Man counterparts that will pop up in the films in separate roles. Among them are Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), the character reinterpreted as a hardboiled pulp hero, Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), an anthropomorphic pig that has spider-powers, and SP//dr (Kimiko Glenn), an adolescent girl that operates a spider-themed mech suit.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be released on December 14, 2018.
