Updated with a Short Film! Is Nathan Fillion Teasing His Involvement in Uncharted Movie?

UPDATE: It seems there was something to the tease, after all. The reveal ended up being a short film starring Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake, directed by Allan Unger.

While the end result is a little anticlimactic in comparison, the film is nevertheless very entertaining and provides a welcome confirmation that Fillion is indeed perfect for the role. You can watch the film below.

In a cryptic Instagram post, Nathan Fillion appears to be teasing his involvement in Sony’s upcoming Uncharted movie.

The last time we heard any news on the project was back in 2017, when Tom Holland was cast as a young Nathan Drake. It was revealed that the film would be a prequel to the popular video game franchise.

Now, it seems that Nathan Fillion is suggesting that he might also be playing a grown up version of the same character.

Fillion posted a picture of the rapper Drake, with the caption ‘Sic Parvis Magna’. Uncharted fans recognise this phrase as the unofficial motto of Nathan Drake, and it seems too coincidental for it not to be related to the upcoming film.

The actor also mentions the date 7/16/18, which suggests an announcement could be coming on Monday 16 July. We’ll have to wait until then to see if Fillion truly is involved with the project.

This isn’t the first time Nathan Fillion has been linked with the role, of course. Nearly every Uncharted fan shares the opinion that not only does the actor look incredibly similar to Nathan Drake, but he also has the charm and magnetic personality required to portray him on the big screen.

Fillion himself even campaigned to play the role back in 2010, and admitted in 2011 that he was ‘certainly still interested’ in playing the character.

Over the years, the fan casting has calmed down slightly as a growing number of fans believe that ship has sailed, with Nathan Fillion being too old to play the character. It’s hard to disagree; the man is 47 years old at the time of writing, which is 9 years older than Nathan Drake was in the Uncharted 4 video game.

We all know that modern cinema can do wonderful things to de-age an actor. But even if the film was to begin filming later this year, that doesn’t give Fillion an awful lot of time left for sequels if this film is a success.

In fact, it goes at odds with the reasoning behind Tom Holland’s casting. It was believed that Sony wanted to make a franchise out of Uncharted, with Holland growing older and older with each film, eventually becoming the Nathan Drake we know in the games. Casting Nathan Fillion as the older version of him does seem to contradict that idea somewhat.

In any event, we’ll soon see what Nathan Fillion meant by that Instagram post. Stay tuned to MNN for further updates on the Uncharted movie.
