Batwoman Gets Her Own Show in CW’s DC Universe

Batwoman is getting her own show in the CW Arrowverse.

After it was initially reported that Batwoman would be introduced in the Arrowverse’s next big crossover event, it has been confirmed that the character will be getting her own TV show.

The series won’t debut until sometime after Batwoman is introduced in the next crossover, but this is huge news for CW regardless.

Variety reports that Batwoman will be centred around Kate Kane, who will be taking to the streets of Gotham with a passion for social justice. She is a highly trained fighter and an out lesbian, determined to put a stop to the criminal resurgence in Gotham City’s underworld.

It would appear that is an origin series for Batwoman, in the same way that Arrow and The Flash both focus on heroes at the beginning of their journey, before they really begin to hit their prime.

When we first heard that Batwoman would be joining the Arrowverse, many assumed that this character had been around for years and that our beloved heroes had been ignorant of her all this time.

However, the show’s premise confirms that she is a new player on the superhero scene. Indeed, Variety claims that she is not a hero yet, saying that ‘she must confront her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.’

This also confirms that Batman is not in action when this series begins, as DC’s flagship hero is usually the one recognised as Gotham’s symbol of hope. Whether or not Bruce Wayne has decided to retire or this series takes place in a world set before Batman, we don’t yet know.

Caroline Dries has been announced as the main writer and executive producer on the project. If fans were hoping for a CW DC superhero show without the soap opera elements to it, you might be out of luck. Dries’s previous writing credits include Vampire Diaries and Smallville, so she definitely knows what is expected from a CW show.

Geoff Johns will be an executive producer on Batwoman with his new studio, Mad Ghost Productions.

Gregg Berlanti is also confirmed to be involved as an executive producer, so fans will be hoping that he can sprinkle some of the same magic on Batwoman that made Arrow and The Flash such high quality shows in their early seasons.

When Batwoman gets officially picked up, Berlanti will set the record for most live action shows on the air at once. Outside of the Arrowverse shows, he is also involved with Black Lightning, Riverdale and up-coming high school football drama All American. And that’s just on the CW.

On other networks, he is producing several upcoming dramas, such as: God Friended Me and The Red Line on CBS; Blindspot on NBC; You for Lifetime; Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix; and Titans and Doom Patrol on DC’s upcoming streaming service.
