‘Jungle Cruise 2’ in Development at Disney

With Jungle Cruise 2 in development, it looks like Disney is keeping its actors close to the chest, especially those that were sent to Premier Access (except for Scarlett Johansson).

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel would bring back both Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, as well as director Jaume Collet-Serra and writer Michael Green. The entire producing team, as well as executive producer Scott Sheldon, are due to return too.

Jungle Cruise is one of the four Disney releases of 2021 to receive the hybrid treatment — it was available in theaters and on Disney Plus simultaneously. The other three were Cruella, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Black Widow. Of those, Raya and the Last Dragon is the only one that, so far, has no plans for any continuation of its characters. Even Black Widow, despite Disney’s legal problems with Scarlett Johansson, will have its co-star, Florence Pugh, back as Yelena Belova in the upcoming Hawkeye series and future Marvel projects. Additionally, Emma Stone just signed her deal to star in and produce the sequel to Cruella.

The action-adventure flick led by Johnson and Blunt is doing pretty well at the box office, as this weekend it just crossed the $100M mark in the U.S., and will soon cross the $200M worldwide threshold. However, the sequel was probably guaranteed regardless of its real success, since Disney is probably trying to avoid problems like the one Scarlett Johansson just presented them; the actress has nothing to lose — her contract with Marvel Studios was up, and she has enough talent to book any movie she wants, or even make them herself. For that reason, Disney offered Emma Stone a lot of money to return for Cruella and probably did the same with Blunt and Johnson.

In addition to this exciting bit of news, The Hollywood Reporter is also confirming that Black Adam, also starring Dwayne Johnson with Collet-Serra in the director’s chair, has wrapped production. That DC movie is currently set to debut in theaters on July 29, 2022, the same day as Indiana Jones 5.
