RUMOR – Epix’s ‘Pennyworth’ to Begin Production This Year

The new Batman prequel series is set to begin production before the end of the year according to Omega Underground.

Pennyworth, which landed a series order with Epix last month, comes from Gotham producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, will follow the younger days of Alfred’s life and his time working for Thomas Wayne in London after leaving the special forces.

Though Pennyworth shares executive producers with Gotham, the two series are not related, so Sean Pertwee (pictured above) is unlikely to return in the title role.

According to Omega Underground, they’ve heard that production on the pilot is expected to take place “sometime this Fall or Winter before the year closes out”. If this is the case then we should hopefully hear some casting news in the next month or two.

Honestly, my first thoughts on hearing about Pennyworth were that it was a hoax. It probably didn’t help my skepticism that I first saw the news on Facebook. But on learning it was true I couldn’t help but think “they’re doing a series about Batman’s butler? Really?” Then I remembered that my first thoughts about a series based on Superman’s grandfather were pretty much the same, and Krypton turned out to be a great series. So I’m definitely keeping an open mind about Pennyworth, it could turn out to be another series I never knew I wanted.
