Julia Garner To Play Silver Surfer in ‘Fantastic Four’

Fantastic Four: Julia Garner To Play Silver Surfer

Julia Garner, mostly known for her career-making role in Netflix’s Ozark (for which she won three Emmys), will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a gender-flipped version of the Silver Surfer, Shalla-Bal, in the new Fantastic Four reboot for Marvel Studios, Deadline reported today.

The film hails from Matt Shakman and has enlisted multiple screenwriters over its development stages, including Josh Friedman, Ian Springer, Jeff Kaplan, and most recently, Eric Pearson. Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby star as Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman, respectively, with Ebon Moss-Bachrach stepping in as The Thing and Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch.

Marvel has locked a July 2025 release date for this one, and production is set to begin filming this summer. With the main four now in place, the studio is focusing on completing the rest of the cast. That included casting Silver Surfer, and the fact that Garner, whose deal is apparently closed, was reported before the actor playing Galactus (who we’ll take the safe assumption is in the movie), could point to the size of her role and perhaps being the primary antagonist of the film.

Javier Bardem is the latest name to be circling the Galactus role, according to the rumors, though the big trades are yet to pick up on that. It’s only a matter of time before his, or anyone else’s name leaks to the press, though. Dr. Doom is also rumored to appear in the film, though probably through a post-credits scene to set up his big role going forward. His casting might not happen until the film is deep into production.

Cameras will roll this summer in London, aiming for a July 25, 2025, release date. The studio is currently in post-production on Deadpool & Wolverine, set to come out this July, and is getting ready for a long reshoot process on Captain America: Brave New World, which will happen later this spring in Atlanta. Blade is also supposed to go up later this year.

Julia Garner is currently shooting the Leigh Whannell pic Wolf Man for Blumhouse, where she co-stars with Christopher Abbott. She was last seen in last year’s The Royal Hotel, and picked up an Emmy nomination for her role in Inventing Anna. She also stars in the forthcoming Paramount thriller Apartment 7A.
