Frank Darabont Directing Two Episodes of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5
As production on Stranger Things season 5 gears up to start in just a couple of weeks, a new name has been added to the director’s list for this season.
Frank Darabont is currently in talks to direct two episodes of Stranger Things, according to Jeff Sneider via his TheInsneider.com newsletter. Most known for writing and directing The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, Darabont has been a big influence on past seasons of the hit Netflix series. He worked on the first season of The Walking Dead and created TNT’s Mob City.
Dan Trachtenberg was confirmed by the streamer a few months ago to be directing an episode, but Sneider pointed out on Twitter that he may be out by now due to scheduling issues.
Shawn Levy confirmed in an interview he would be back as director and executive producer on the final season. Levy directed episodes 3-4 of all previous four seasons, so it seems likely he’s been set for those slots as well this season. Scheduling could be tricky though, as he’ll be in London filming Deadpool 3 for the first few weeks of the year, and then he has to go into a rushed post-production to meet the July 2024 release date. Will the Duffers wait for him to wrap that so he can shoot his episodes, or will he be forced to make time for them?
Deadline reporter earlier this month that the series could start shooting either on January 5 or January 8 in Atlanta. The Duffers recently said the shoot could last an entire year (giving Levy plenty of time to wrap his Marvel venture and come down for a visit).
The full cast is expected to come back for one last ride, eight years after the first season aired on Netflix. And most of them are probably wishing it was already over. They will be joined by Linda Hamilton, who was announced to be joining the ensemble over the summer.
A 2025 release date should be in line for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
