‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Delayed to 2025, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ Pushed Back Three Months, and More Paramount Schedule Changes

(L-R) Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Vanessa Kirby as The White Widow in Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.

It’s actually kind of amazing that, even though his name was all over the media coverage in the early days of the SAG-AFTRA strike, it wasn’t Tom Cruise who almost saved the industry with last week’s all-star meeting between top-tier guild members and the negotiating committee. There’s still time for him, though, as talks are set to resume on Tuesday but we’re still several meeting away from an actual agreement.

And because we couldn’t get one in time, the Great Delaying of Our Time continues. We feared this would happen back in early September, when the studios couldn’t get a deal done with the writers, but we couldn’t really avoid it any longer. As Disney considers delaying Deadpool 3 (it’s also quite surprising they haven’t made the official announcement yet), Paramount has confirmed several changes to their calendar, with the most significant one being a nearly-year-long delay of Mission: Impossible 8. Via Deadline, this is what was announced today:

  • Mission: Impossible 8 moves to May 23, 2025 (previously set for June 28, 2024)
  • A Quiet Place: Day One moves to June 28, 2024 (previously set for March 8, 2024)
  • IF, John Krasinski’s next directorial effort, moves to May 17, 2024 (previously set for May 24, 2024)
  • The untitled, animated SpongeBob SquarePants movie moves to December 19, 2025 (previously set for May 23, 2025)

The delay of Mission: Impossible 8 seemed like a no-brainer at this point, as not only the movie hasn’t finished shooting, but we’re in a completely different season now, so it wouldn’t be the same to restart production. I lost track of where the globe-trotting franchise was last filming, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were forced to wait until the spring to be able to film again, even if the strike was settled this week.

Here is the most interesting part, though: Per Variety, the sequel will be dropping its “Dead Reckoning Part Two” original subtitle, in favor of a new title. It seems like they learned a lesson from the box office performance of the first film, though perhaps it wasn’t the actual lesson. (Which was, of course, do not mess with Barbenheimer.) Despite that, they have ensured a three-week IMAX run in 2025, which Chris Nolan took away from them this summer.

As far as the new A Quiet Place movie goes, it’s possible they needed some additional photography days and they couldn’t get them done over the summer like they probably had planned. It’s also possible that the post-production team needed the actors to do some ADR, and because they studios can’t really predict when they’ll be available, they couldn’t guarantee they’d have the movie ready for an early March release, so they just moved it to the next best slot.

And speaking of March 2024 delays, World of Reel is hearing that Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 will be moving off its March 29 release date. Instead, Warner Bros. would be putting it out during the summer, but not before it has its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. WB is also rumored to be having the premiere of Furiosa there next May.
