‘The Zone of Interest’ Sets December 8 Theatrical Release
One of the most anticipated movies from this awards season, and the most recent Grand Jury Prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival, The Zone of Interest from director Jonathan Glazer (Under the Skin), has set a release date for its limited opening for December 8 and revealed two new images. A24 handles the worldwide distribution.
The film follows Christian Friedel as Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and Sandra Hüller as his wife and accomplice Hewdig Höss, as they both try to build a life with their children next to the camp. The film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to a six-minute standing ovation and is already projected to get nominations in major categories, including Best Picture. It is Glazer’s first film since 2013’s Under the Skin, which starred Scarlett Johansson.
Per IndieWire, which got the exclusive for the release date, Glazer set up 360-degree sets with multiple cameras installed to add to the film’s atmosphere of “unsettling quality of surveillance.” Łukasz Żal (Cold War) served as cinematographer. The Zone of Interest will next play at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Other potential Best Picture candidates include the recently-released Oppenheimer, as well as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. These two are currently the big hitters, but as it usually happens, awards season has a lot of surprises in store for us. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Zone of Interest turned out to be a major contender for the big prize, along with its direct Cannes competition, this year’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall. Other potential candidates include Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, David Fincher’s The Killer, or even Dune: Part Two, should it see the light of day this year.

Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
