Netflix debuted over the weekend the official trailer for their biggest movie of the summer, the Gal Gadot-led spy-thriller Heart of Stone. In addition, Total Film Magazine started to drop some content from their upcoming issue, which will be focused on that film, featuring new images and also interviews with the cast and crew.

The trailer was shown during the global fan event named Tudum, after the iconic Netflix sound at the beginning of their movies and shows. Tom Harper directs what Netflix and the crew hopes will be the first of a long-standing series of movies focused on Rachel Stone (Gadot), “a member of an elusive and mysterious group of elite spies known as the Charter”, who are “the most highly trained agents — no political leanings, no national allegiances — working together to keep peace in a turbulent world.”

The McGuffin of the movie is the Heart, an AI software capable of tracking anyone’s entire online history and using it to predict their future moves, and which is lost at the beginning of the film, setting off a high-stakes adventure for Stone and her team to get it back. Check out a preview of that in the first trailer:

In an interview with Total Film, Gadot talked about how she’s been circulating the idea of this project for a long time and how now it’s finally come to fruition:

“I think Wonder Woman was the thing that really gave me the confidence that it’s OK to go dream and produce a movie that is a female-driven action film – a thriller – for everyone to enjoy. Jaron [Varsano], my husband, who is also my partner in life and in the production company [Pilot Wave] that we’ve had – we had a meeting with David Ellison [CEO of Skydance Media] back in 2017. And at the end of the meeting, he asked me, ‘What do you want to do?’ And I told him, ‘I want to do this. This is what I want to do.’ We shook on it that day, and here we are.”

According to reports from the time this project started to gain some momentum, Netflix wanted this to be the setting-off point for their own female-Bond franchise, as they attempt to start building more IP to establish their own game in town. Bollywood star Alia Bhatt also revealed to Total Film that the fact that this was an action-heavy film led by a woman was what attracted her to finally join the ranks of a Hollywood movie:

“I love the idea that it was headlined by this female superstar. It was a woman-led action film – it’s what makes it compelling in a completely different way, opposed to just a woman being a part of the plan. I’ve worked in Hindi cinema for the last 10 years, and I was prepared to understand that if I was starting afresh in a completely new language, I would not maybe start off with the biggest or the best role. But this was a really good, important role, very well written, and it complemented the other characters really well.”

Heart of Stone will hit Netflix on August 11.
