Daisy Ridley To Lead ‘Cleaner’, Latest Action-Thriller From Martin Campbell; Package Joins Cannes Market

Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is set to direct Daisy Ridley in a new action-thriller set in modern-day London titled Cleaner; the package will be sold at the Cannes market coming up.

This is according to Deadline, who report that Anton (Greenland) will be financing the film and offering it to distributors in Southern France later this month; Sebastien Raybaud and Callum Grant are producing. Cameras will start rolling in late summer.

The plot focuses on a group of activists taking over an annual gala at London’s the Shard, the tallest skyscraper in Western Europe; one of them turns out to be more radical than the rest, and is willing to murder anyone in the building if that means his message will get out there. To save the day, we only have Joey Ride, a former soldier-turned-window cleaner, played by Daisy Ridley, who will be suspended 90 stores up outside the building and must find a way to get everyone to safety and bring the zealots to justice.

it’s unclear from the Deadline story if Campbell wrote the script as well, or if an unnamed writer did it, but one does have to wonder if the writers of Die Hard will at least receive a “based on a story by” credit. Cleaner (quite the un-sticky name, if we’re being honest) is the latest to join a very hot Cannes lineup that keeps adding more and more projects by the hour.

Campbell hasn’t exactly been hitting the mark lately, and in a town that runs on the “what have you done for me lately?” mantra, having the Liam Neeson-led Memory as the answer isn’t really encouraging. However, he has a new movie in post-production titled Dirty Angels, starring Eva Green, and centered around a rescue team caught in a Middle-Eastern geopolitical conflict, which could be interesting.

Meanwhile, Ridley is currently awaiting the release of her latest film, Sometimes I Think About Dying, which finally picked up distribution by Oscilloscope in April after debuting at Sundance to solid reviews, though no release date has been set yet. Also coming down the pipeline for her are The Marsh King’s Daughter and Young Woman And The Sea, of which we know very little so far. She is also set to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in an upcoming Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
