‘Dune: Part Two’ First Trailer Sees Paul Atreides Fulfilling His Destiny

Dune Part Two

After dropping the first look at the film last week through a giant Vanity Fair story, Warner Bros. has finally revealed the first official trailer for the upcoming Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.

There are a lot of cool nuggets in the new trailer, both for fans of the original book as well as people who jumped on board through the movie, but perhaps the biggest takeaway is that Villeneuve (as expected) is keeping the unbelievable scope of the first film and even improving upon it. The cinematography is, once again, breathtaking, and more than ever before, this seems like the definitive adaptation of the original novel. It has the potential to, along with the first film, be another one of those films that, in 20 years, when a new studio executive throws around the idea of re-adapting Dune, people will look stunned thinking “But how can we do it better than Denis?”

It’s interesting how the focus of the trailer keeps shifting as we move along. We start with an intimate, yet brief moment between Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, hinting that this movie is their love story. But we quickly transition into a voice-over by Florence Pugh, who gets a few shots to shine as Princess Irulan, even suggesting she will be the third most important character in the film after Paul and Chani. Then we cut to what could have been the big moment of the trailer — Paul learning how to ride the sandworm.

Then, we visit some of his antagonists in the film, namely Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler), who almost looks unrecognizable; interestingly enough, the scene in the coliseum seems to be in black and white, yet his interaction with Lady Margot had a bit more color in it. The big culmination of the trailer is when Paul Atreides emerges as the leader of the Fremen; this might have been considered a spoiler for any other movie, but WB and Villeneuve seem to be more interested in showcasing the massive scale of this movie over keeping plot points from a 68-year-old novel (that has been adapted to the screen twice) under wraps.

Denis Villeneuve is back as director, producer, and co-writer, along with Jon Spaihts. Greig Fraser is back as cinematographer, Jacqueline West is the costume designer, Joe Walker is the editor, Patrice Vermette is the production designer, and Hans Zimmer is also doing the music this time around. The cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Harkonnen, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Here is the official synopsis:

The saga continues as award-winning filmmaker Denis Villeneuve embarks on “Dune: Part Two,” the next chapter of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novel “Dune”, with an expanded all-star international ensemble cast. The film, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2021’s six-time Academy Award-winning “Dune.”

“Dune: Part Two” will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Dune: Part Two will open in theaters on November 3. It will not have its debut during the Venice Film Festival, as it will not be ready in time, but it will probably show up at some other festival during the fall.
