‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 3 Hitting Hulu on August 8

Only Murders in the Building Season 2

Just a few days after announcing production had wrapped on the third season of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, Steve Martin has confirmed at a private event that the series will be coming out on August 8.

The news comes to us via Variety, as two people who attended the most recent “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” show on Saturday in Orlando, Florida, confirmed to them. Apparently, the banter went like this:

STEVE MARTIN: “Catch the new season August 8.”

MARTIN SHORT: “Our show is like Steve trying to pee — it streams for 33 minutes.”

Cameras stopped rolling in late April, meaning it will probably be a race to the finish line for this one, with only three months of post-production. However, it’s not a particularly complicated task for them, as they probably faced the schedule for the third season as a traditional TV sitcom, where they were airing episodes while still shooting, and therefore they had to put them together quite quickly in the post-production bay. Production began mid-January when it was also announced that Meryl Streep would join the third season.

The plot of the third season was set up by the final moments of season 2. After solving their most recent crime in the building, we jump forward a year and meet back with our three protagonists… And Paul Rudd. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, after Rudd’s character plummets onto the stage when he was about to perform the leading part of Martin Short’s character’s play. All eyes are then on Short, who was seen arguing with him moments earlier.

There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered, but all of that will come in time. Only Murders in the Building has become a fan-favorite, and scored 17 Emmy nominations for its first season; season 2 is also poised to earn quite a lot of them too this summer. It’s unknown if this will be the final season, especially given Steve Martin’s comments last year about retiring once the series is done.
