‘Spider-Man’ Film Series and Spin-Offs Finally Headed To Disney Plus

Spider-Man Disney Plus
Four of the Spider-Man movies produced by Sony Pictures have arrived on Disney Plus today, with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom set to arrive next month… And even more after that.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s first The Amazing Spider-Man film would be joining a host of other Marvel content available to stream on Disney Plus starting today. Given that these are Sony’s movies, this adds to Disney’s portfolio of third-party content on their streaming service and allows them to broaden their horizons, while Sony continue to take advantage of their decision not to launch a streaming platform of their own and instead get profits from licensing their content elsewhere. In addition, it was the first film in the franchise that is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Homecoming, will be arriving on May 12.

Press from Sony indicates that “additional titles from [the Sony Pictures film and television library] are expected to premiere on Disney Plus in the U.S. later this year”. This means that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should be arriving to the service at an unspecified point in the near future, alongside several non-Marvel shows and films, but we’ll have to wait for them to announce those dates. (Side note: it would be very smart for Sony if they were to put Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on the service right before the sequel comes out in theaters this July.)

A separate thread also pointed out that Venom will be joining the service on the same day that Homecoming does, with the distance given seemingly to indicate that a degree of separation from the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper (mid-credits scene for No Way Home featuring Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Venom aside) and legacy film adaptations with the wall-crawler. Meanwhile, the web-head’s other MCU appearances in Captain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity WarAvengers: Endgame, and What If…? are already available to stream on Disney Plus.

Currently, all of Sony’s new movies first spend time on Netflix before eventually leaving the service, with Disney getting the second streaming window. As such, this development has been a long time coming, but it’s good to see that it’s finally here. This will also mean that while the likes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Far From HomeVenom: Let There Be CarnageSpider-Man: No Way Home, and Morbius should hopefully be set to arrive soon enough, there will also be a longer wait for Disney Plus viewers to watch future projects on the service, such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-VerseKraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and the presumed new trilogy set to follow No Way Home. Netflix will get those first. In addition, Sony has various Spider-Man shows in development for Amazon Prime Video that are not anticipated to stream on Disney Plus anytime soon, if ever.

The first four Spider-Man films are available to stream on Disney Plus now, with additional titles arriving on the streaming service starting May 12, 2023.
