‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Officially Revealed, New MonsterVerse Film Still on Track for March 2024

Godzilla x Kong teaser

Legendary has just unveiled the full title for the upcoming next theatrical chapter in their MonsterVerse franchise, which is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The studio thought a random Wednesday was the perfect time to drop the kaiju-sized news on social channels. While we had known for months the film had moved into production without any hiccups, plot details were hidden deep into the Hollow Earth, and the title was a big question mark, given that Godzilla and Kong became allies by the end of 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Well, we now have a solution to that “problem” and a teaser of what’s coming next. Check out the ominous teaser below:

Both the title and the short teaser suggest the new threat our favorite titans will be facing this time around is that of a “new empire” emerging from the ruins of the ancient Kong civilization, a key part of the MonsterVerse’s mythology that was briefly explored in Godzilla vs. Kong. We also got our first look at what appears to be an orangutan-like titan, probably a descendant or close relative of the Kongs. Previous reports mentioned there was a big interest in exploring the Hollow Earth and its past next, and it seems like Godzilla x Kong is going wild with that idea, acting as more of a Kong: Skull Island sequel than a Godzilla: King of the Monsters follow-up to balance things out after both titans had to deal with MechaGodzilla and the post-Ghidorah world.

The main cast was fully revealed by Warner and Legendary a while back. It includes returning Godzilla vs. Kong veterans Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle, who are joined by newcomers Dan Stevens (Legion, The Guest), Fala Chen (Irma VepShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Alex Ferns (The BatmanChernobyl), and Rachel House (Hunt for the WilderpeopleThor: Ragnarok).

Wingard is directing from a script by Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), and longtime collaborator Simon Barrett (The Guest). Also returning are cinematographer Ben Seresin, production designer Tom Hammock, editor Josh Schaeffer, and composer Tom Holkenborg. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric Mcleod, Brian Rogers, Thomas Tull, and Jon Jashni, with executive producers Josh Grode, Adam Wingard, Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Kenji Okuhira, and Yoshimitsu Banno also on board.

The as-of-yet untitled sequel will open in theaters worldwide on March 15, 2024. On the TV side, Legendary has teamed up with Apple for a live-action series set between the events of Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman directed the first two episodes, and father and son Kurt and Wyatt Russell spearhead a cast that includes Mari Yamamoto (Pachinko), Anna Sawai (F9), Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento), Kiersey Clemons (Transparent), Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown), and Elisa Lasowski (Versailles).
