New ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Trailer Sees Miles Morales Doing His Own Thing

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer #2

It’s taken a while, but the second full trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is here. And finally, we have a good look at the sequel’s plot and main players.

2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended with Miles Morales and the Spider-People from other dimensions destroying Wilson Fisk’s dangerous collider and going home. After the final battle, Miles embraced the responsibilities of his teenage life, with and without the Spider-Man mask. But, surprise, Spider-Gwen managed to contact him from her own dimension.

As teased by that movie’s hilarious post-credits scene, Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 plays a major role in the sequel, leading the Spider-Force, a group of Spider-People from all over the multiverse tasked with defending its integrity. We already knew that Miles would find himself at odds with them (for some reason) when an extremely dangerous villain called the Spot shows up, and the new trailer doubles down on that premise.

You can watch it below:

While co-director Kemp Powers explained in the past Across the Spider-Verse would be more Gwen Stacy-focused than the first movie, this new trailer is centered on Miles Morales and how he’s trying to juggle his Spider-Man responsibilities with his normal life (we already know how it goes with Spider-People…). Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 also gets tons of attention and is presented as a formidable antagonist once things go south between Miles and him. Co-writer and producer Chris Miller has promised the adventure will be a very emotional ride as well, so buckle up.

On top of all the visual extravaganza and creativity on display, there are two or three fun winks and references thrown into this one, such as an obvious nod to the MCU’s Spider-Man and his misadventures with Doctor Strange. When it comes to Tom Holland’s potential cameo in the film, past rumors have been contradictory, so we wouldn’t hold our breath, but you never know with a project as packed and massive as this one. It looks like any frame featuring the seemingly infinite Spider-Force will be a huge Easter egg hunt.

The returning — that we know of — voice cast members are Shameik Moore (Miles Morales), Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy), Jake Johnson (Peter B. Parker), Oscar Isaac (Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099), Brian Tyree Henry (Jefferson Davis), Jorma Taccone (The Vulture), and Luna Lauren Vélez (Rio Morales), among others. New additions include Jason Schwartzman (Jonathan Ohnn aka The Spot), Issa Rae (Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman), Daniel Kaluuya (Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk), Greta Lee (Lyla, Miguel’s AI assistant), and Shea Whigham (George Stacy, Gwen’s father). We can also welcome Spider-Man India, voiced by Deadpool veteran Karan Soni.

Animation experts Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are making their feature directorial debut with Across the Spider-Verse. Phil Lord, co-writer and producer on the first movie, was joined by longtime companion Christopher Miller and superhero movie veteran Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to pen the script for the sequel. Lord, Miller, Christina Steinberg, and Sony’s Avi Arad and Amy Pascal are the producers on the project.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will swing into cinemas on June 2, 2023.
