‘Captain America: New World Order’ Adds Liv Tyler as Betty Ross

Captain America: New World Order

It’s now been confirmed that Liv Tyler will be reprising her role as Betty Ross in the upcoming Captain America: New World Order.

The story appeared today on all major trades, essentially hinting that Disney allowed them to share the information (possibly after being spotted on set). The actress last played the character in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, opposite Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner. That movie was mostly ignored by the current MCU, with the main role being recast and all other characters ignored. Things started to change when William Hurt returned as Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Civil War; then, Tim Roth reprised his role as The Abomination in She-Hulk, and now, both Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson (as The Leader) are coming back for Captain America: New World Order.

Tyler joins a starry ensemble that so far includes Anthony Mackie in the titular role, Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross (in the wake of Hurt’s passing last year), Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley and Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Shira Haas. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson co-wrote the script, with Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) directing. It is set to be Marvel’s first paranoid thriller; plot details are otherwise being kept under wraps.

Ford will be playing Betty Ross’ father, who is now President of the United States; he’s also supposed to play the role in Thunderbolts, which will bow in theaters a couple of months after New World Order. With so many Hulk-related characters, it seems plausible we’ll also be getting one of the Hulks in the current MCU. Rumors from last fall had Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk making an appearance, though we shall see how that plays out in the end. She would also make sense in Daredevil: Born Again, given her current relationship with Matt Murdock. Word out there also puts Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val in the movie, building on the connection between New World Order and Thunderbolts.

Captain America: New World Order is set to premiere in theaters on May 3, 2024. Production is currently underway in Atlanta.
