After airing during ABC’s telecast of the Oscars, the new trailer for The Little Mermaid has been released online.

The official trailer is our most extended look at the upcoming live-action remake yet, following the teaser trailer that debuted during D23 Expo and a 30-second TV spot that was revealed a couple of weeks back. It showcases Halle Bailey’s Ariel while also giving us a sense of what the rest of the cast will bring to the under-the-sea adventure. Check it out here:

Two posters have also been revealed for the upcoming movie:

In a recent interview with The Face, Bailey revealed that she was approached by director Rob Marshall to audition for the lead role after her performance of Where Is the Love with her older sister Chlöe at the 2019 Grammy Awards. The two sisters were so talented and eager to eat the world from their Georgia home that Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment signed them during their teenage years. Their 2018 album The Kids Are Alright, which they wrote and produced on their own from their living room, earned them nominations for Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

In the interview, she shared what’s special about this new incarnation of the story:

“What’s beautiful about this version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ is that it’s a lot more modern. Although the original film featured Part of Your World, a quietly defiant ballad about ’Bright young women sick of swimmin’ /Ready to stand’, the overarching message wasn’t exactly what you’d call feminist. Ariel literally relinquishes her voice and drastically changes her body for the man of her dreams.

When we saw it, when we were younger, she gave up everything for the guy. But I don’t think [that] reflects modern women today. So [now] it’s more about Ariel finding freedom for herself because of this world that she’s obsessed with. [Prince Eric] is a cherry on top. But it’s not all about him.”

Prince Eric is played in the film by Jonah Hauer-King, and Javier Bardem is taking over the role of King Triton, with Melissa McCarthy playing Ursula and Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina. Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) directed the feature, with David Magee (A Man Called Otto) credited as the screenwriter.
