Henry Cavill Announces Return as Superman
Henry Cavill has announced on social media he’s officially back as Superman.
This story contains spoilers for the new DC film Black Adam.
In a social media post released on Monday, Henry Cavill confirmed that his appearance in the post-credits scene of Black Adam was not an isolated event. He is back as the character, five years after the last time we saw him in theaters in 2017’s Justice League theatrical cut. (The actor would appear again in HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, though he didn’t do any additional photography for that.)
In a video released on Instagram, he thanked the fans for their support and teased many things to come. Check it out below:

In the post-credits scene, Cavill is seen in a more comic-book traditional look, with the hair twirl and a more vibrantly colored suit. Additionally, notes from the John Williams theme are heard in the background, in a similar way to how it played during Joss Whedon’s version of Justice League.
Last week, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Warner Bros. was fast-tracking a Man of Steel sequel to get Cavill’s version of the character back on the big screen as fast as possible. The project is currently searching for writers, with Mission: Impossible‘s Christopher McQuarrie being the studio’s top (but not final) choice. The director has been rumored in the past to be helming a Superman movie, though it hasn’t come to fruition yet. Given Henry Cavill’s statement, it looks like there’s plenty of Superman to come in the next few years, and he’s very much on board with it. (The actor is rumored to not have been very pleased with the direction Zack Snyder was taking the character in, and apparently appreciated the change of pace that Joss Whedon brought to the table when he took over Justice League.)
For now, Cavill is very much committed to Netflix’s The Witcher, which just wrapped production on season 3 earlier this year and is aiming for a late 2023 release. With no script in place for the yet-to-be-titled Man of Steel sequel, we are probably looking at a year’s worth of wait before the project is in shape to enter pre-production. The movie will not start shooting before the spring of 2024, so at the very least we are looking at a 2025 release date. And that is if the stars align and Cavill’s shooting schedule for Netflix does not interfere with WBD’s plannings. Another thing to consider is the heavily rumored scenario of Comcast acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery over the next twelve months (something that WBD CEO David Zaslav has denied despite multiple reports pointing in that direction). Ever since Henry Cavill took over the role of Clark Kent/Superman, DC and its parent studio have undergone multiple directive shakeups, something that has gravely affected the character and the direction of the DC Universe as a whole.
Taking all of that into account, it’s very much possible the actor will be featured as a cameo in multiple DC projects coming down the line. Shazam! came very close to bringing Cavill back in 2019, so a cameo for its sequel, shot in secrecy the same way Black Adam‘s was, is very much on the table right now. Additionally, we know that The Flash will be revisiting the events of Man of Steel as Michael Shannon was confirmed to be part of the cast, so it’s possible the actor could make a return there too. Related to this, Ben Affleck will also be appearing in The Flash and later in Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, so the jury is out on whether or not he will be back as well for future DC movies.
