Sacha Baron Cohen Rumored To Be Playing Mephisto in ‘Ironheart’

Mephisto - Sacha Baron Cohen

Yes, we’re here again. It hasn’t been two years since WandaVision came out, and MCU fans are back with more Mephisto theories… or are they?

A rumor that started circulating last week mentioned that Sacha Baron Cohen had joined the cast of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ironheart, playing a “version” of Dormammu. The Twitter account MCU Stats, which posted the original rumor, later updated it to mention that he is actually playing Mephisto, an extra-dimensional demon from Marvel Comics that was widely speculated to be the main villain behind the events of WandaVision back when the show was airing. It seems like there may be some truth to those rumors, as Deadline is saying that a source close to the production is telling them there is indeed talk on set of the actor being part of the show.

Moreover, when asked to comment on the story by the trade, reps for both Marvel Studios and Cohen refused to do so. Deadline also speculates that, if true, the actor could go on to play a part in other projects, as it’s usually the case with Marvel. A possible candidate is the WandaVision spin-off series Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which according to lead actress Kathryn Hahn will begin filming next month.

There is a direct link between both series, as Ironheart is rumored to be about the co-existence of advanced technology and magic in the MCU. Anthony Ramos is confirmed to be playing The Hood, who will be the main villain of the show (and who is expected to be a major player in the MCU going forward), a supervillain with ties to the mystic arts and the magic realm. In the comics, the character gets his powers from Dormammu, though it is expected that Mephisto will be playing that role in Ironheart. Coven of Chaos is also expected to deal with the magic side of the MCU as the title character suggests.

Ironheart is currently in production, with Dominique Thorne attached to play the lead character, Riri Williams aka Ironheart. The character will make her MCU debut in next month’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
