‘The Wonder’ New Trailer Sees Florence Pugh Play a 19th-Century Nurse

Florence Pugh is back this fall movie season with yet another film. It is Netflix’s The Wonder, and a new trailer has just been released.
The movie is playing in several festivals, including most recently the Toronto International Film Festival, Telluride, San Sebastián, and coming up, the BFI London Film Festival. The Wonder sees Pugh as the center of the mysterious story of the Irish “fasting girls,” a 19th-century phenomenon that saw young women claim to have stopped eating, insisting that they were surviving because of religious intervention.
Pugh plays Lib Wright, a nurse sent to meet with one of these fasting girls, Anna O’Donnell (Kíla Lord Cassidy). Lib is tasked with observing Anna over the course of two weeks and determining whether or not her food-deprived survival is a miracle from heaven or something more sinister.
In a new trailer for the film, Pugh stands atop a mountain shaking her fists, yelling, “Will you help me?” as she’s shown continuously trying to identify what happened to these young girls. The screen then cuts to Cassidy’s Anna saying, “You don’t understand us.” Check it out here:
Based on the novel by Emma Donoghue (Room), The Wonder weaves a story of faith, kindness, and the unbearable burden of grief. Donoghue also co-wrote the script with Alice Birch (Normal People). The Wonder is directed by Sebastián Lelio, who won an Oscar for A Fantastic Woman.
So far, coming out of festival season, reviews have been mostly positive, with an 81% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72 Metacritic score. It’s not expected to be a major player come the Oscar nominations in early 2023, but it could sneak in if some of the movies that are considered to be strong contenders right now can’t keep up with the pacing of the next five to six months.
The Wonder is hitting select theaters soon and will be available on Netflix on November 16.
