‘El Muerto’, Starring Bad Bunny as Marvel Hero, Taps Jonás Cuarón To Direct

El Muerto

El Muerto is picking up some momentum at Sony Pictures.

According to The Wrap, Jonás Cuarón (Desierto) has been tapped to direct the project, with Blue Beetle scribe Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penning the screenplay. The movie was officially announced back in April at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with Grammy-winning artist Bad Bunny (real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) attached to play the lead role.

The singer landed on this Mexican wrestler after scouring the pages of Spider-Man comics looking for the “right superhero property for himself.” He is a super-powered wrestler who originally fought and nearly unmasked Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match, right before Spider-Man stung him with a paralyzing poison. After his oppressor, El Dorado, came to claim his life, El Muerto was saved by the webslinger, and the two then teamed up to defeat Dorado.

Jonás Cuarón, son of acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, was behind the 2015 film Desierto, starring Gael García Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, which went completely under the radar back in the day. He’s also attached to a Zorro reboot titled Z, starring Gael García Bernal and Kiersey Clemons. He also co-wrote the 2013 Oscar-winning film Gravity with his father, who directed the picture.

Sony has two Marvel movies in post-production or deep into filming. Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chandor and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was originally going to be released in theaters next January — it is now scheduled for an October 6, 2023, release. Similarly, Madame Web, by S.J. Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson, moved from 2023 to February 16, 2024. The logo for this movie was recently revealed through crew merch on social media.

El Muerto is currently scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on January 12, 2024, though the studio recently changed its mind on the January release date for Kraven the Hunter, which could mean an eventual slight delay. Filming could begin in the first half of 2023.
