‘True Detective’ Season 4 Rounds Out Cast With John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and More

True Detective S1

HBO is now filling out an impressive cast for the fourth chapter of True Detective.

It appears the new installment of the hit crime drama series is being fast-tracked, as it wasn’t until last March that we received confirmation True Detective: Night Country was happening for sure. Then, roughly two months later, Jodie Foster was 100% locked as the series’ lead. Now, we’ve learned (via Deadline) about the bulk of season 4’s main cast.

Rounding out the cast for True Detective: Night Country are John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter’s Bone), Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers, Doctor Who), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Star Wars: Andor), Finn Bennett (Domina, The Nevers), and Anna Lambe (Three Pines, Trickster). They are set as leads alongside Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in season 4 of the crime anthology series. Brief character descriptions (straight from Deadline) of each of the actors have been released too:

  • Hawkes will play Hank Prior, a police officer with old grudges hiding under a quiet surface.
  • Eccleston will portray Ted Corsaro, the regional Chief of Police and a political animal with a long history tying him to Liz Danvers (Foster).
  • Shaw is Rose Aguineau, a survivalist with a past full of secrets.
  • Bennett will play Peter Prior, Liz Danvers’ protégé and apprentice — both for better or worse.
  • Lambe will portray Kayla Malee, a young nurse with little patience for anybody that messes with her family.

The current synopsis for Night Country reads as follow:

In True Detective: Night Country, from writer-director-showrunner Issa López, when the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

López and Foster serve as executive producers alongside Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak through Pastel, and Mari-Jo Winkler. Alan Page Arriaga is a writer/exec producer too. Anonymous Content, Chris Mundy, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, True Detective season 1 director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and original series creator Nic Pizzolatto also executive produce. Serving as producers are Princess Daazhraii Johnson and Cathy Tagnak Rexford, who lead an Iñupiaq advisory council to consult on Alaska Native culture. Sam Breckman also serves as producer.
