‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Sequel Now in Production, Full Cast and Crew Officially Announced

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

The next theatrical entry in the MonsterVerse will be a straight Godzilla vs. Kong follow-up after all.

Even though we had known for a while a new MonsterVerse installment from Godzilla vs. Kong helmer Adam Wingard was coming, the general assumption (backed by strong rumors) was that it’d focus solely on Kong as the new ruler of the Hollow Earth. But now we know, straight from Warner Bros. and Legendary, that the next film will actually be another big crossover involving Godzilla and Kong — probably collaborating from the get-go this time around. The press release promises the following:

“This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence — and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Moreover, the main cast has been fully revealed by Warner and Legendary. It includes returning Godzilla vs. Kong veterans Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle, who are joined by newcomers Dan Stevens (Legion, The Guest), Fala Chen (Irma Vep, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Alex Ferns (The Batman, Chernobyl), and Rachel House (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok). Whether more faces from past MonsterVerse installments end up appearing, we’ll have to wait and see.

Wingard is directing from a script by Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), and longtime collaborator Simon Barrett (The Guest). Also returning are cinematographer Ben Seresin, production designer Tom Hammock, editor Josh Schaeffer, and composer Tom Holkenborg. The film, now shooting in Queensland, Australia, is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric Mcleod, Brian Rogers, Thomas Tull, and Jon Jashni, with executive producers Josh Grode, Adam Wingard, Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Kenji Okuhira, and Yoshimitsu Banno.

The as-of-yet untitled sequel will open in theaters worldwide on March 15, 2024. On the TV side, Legendary has teamed up with Apple for a live-action series set between the events of Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman will be directing the first two episodes, and father and son Kurt and Wyatt Russell are set to spearhead a cast that includes Mari Yamamoto (Pachinko), Anna Sawai (F9), Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento), Kiersey Clemons (Transparent), Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown), and Elisa Lasowski (Versailles).
