Ana de Armas Transforms into Marilyn Monroe in New ‘Blonde’ Trailer
Netflix has released a brand-new trailer for Blonde, the highly anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic, starring Ana de Armas and written and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford).

This new promo comes out a day after Vanity Fair released four new exclusive photos from the film. Speaking to the magazine, Dominik expressed his motivation behind making the movie (which he’s been developing for 15 years, cycling through three different leads) as follows:
“I saw an opportunity to describe an adult life through the lens of mistaken childhood beliefs and trauma.”
The movie is an adaptation of the 2000 best seller of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. The writer explained the similarities between Marilyn Monroe and Emma Bovary:
“Both are young women who have a very romantic and probably unrealistic vision of love. Marilyn was so insecure, so demanding, that it was hard for anyone to love her or even help her. Many men, including her second husband, baseball player Joe DiMaggio, tried, though, before backing away, afraid.”
Vanity Fair reporter Sylvie Bommel, who has seen a nearly-complete cut of the film, describes it as a non-conventional biopic, writing “Blonde focuses on destiny: a woman in search of love who will become a great seductress.” She added that she was not bored for one of the movie’s 166 minutes.
In addition to Ana de Armas, the cast includes Adrien Brody and Bobby Cannavale as Monroe’s two husbands, The Playwright and The Ex-Athlete, respectively. Julianne Nicholson plays Norma Jeane’s mother, Gladys. The film also features Sara Paxton, Xavier Samuel, and Evan Williams. It will make its worldwide debut at the Venice Film Festival in early September before being released on Netflix on September 22. The film is expected to be a contender in a few Oscar categories, including and especially Best Actress.
