Today, Netflix released the teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s animation debut: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

The synopsis for the movie reads as follows:

“Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.”

Speaking to Vanity Fair in a first-look piece they published in June, Guillermo del Toro explained why the story of the Wooden Boy was always so attractive to him:

“I’ve always been very intrigued by the links between Pinocchio and Frankenstein. They are both about a child that is thrown into the world. They are both created by a father who then expects them to figure out what’s good, what’s bad, the ethics, the morals, love, life, and essentials, on their own. I think that was, for me, childhood. You had to figure it out with your very limited experience.”

He also added that the movie will be family-friendly, and he hopes that it will be multigenerational as well:

“These are times that demand from kids a complexity that is tremendous. Far more daunting, I think, than when I was a child. Kids need answers and reassurances.… For me, this is for both children and adults that talk to each other. It tackles very deep ideas about what makes us human.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio features the voices of Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, Tilda Swinton as the Fairy, Cate Blanchett as Sprezzatura, Christoph Waltz as Count Volpe, Ron Perlman as Podesta, Finn Wolfhard as Candlewick, John Turturro as Master Cherry, Tim Blake Nelson as The Coachmen, and Burn Gorman as the Carabiniere. Guillermo del Toro co-wrote the script with Patrick McHale, and co-directed it with Mark Gustafson. The stop motion animation was done by Shadow Machine in Portland, Oregon. It is scheduled to receive a short theatrical release in November before premiering on Netflix in December. Oddly enough, it’s not the only Pinocchio movie scheduled to be released this year, as Robert Zemeckis will be debuting his own take on the character in a live-action film that will hit Disney Plus on September 9 and stars Tom Hanks as Geppetto.
