Maya Erskine Replaces Phoebe Waller-Bridge in ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Reboot

Maya Erskine

Donald Glover and Amazon have found a new co-lead for the Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot series: PEN15 star Maya Erskine

Glover himself, who serves as co-creator and exec producer besides starring in the show, confirmed the news during an interview for Interview. We had been wondering for months about this project, since Phoebe Waller-Bridge exited back in September due to creative differences — Glover’s comments on her departure were brief, but he promptly confirmed Maya Erskine as the replacement and praised her:

Yeah. She’s dope. It’s exciting. I really love the show. I’m writing the finale now.

With Glover saying the scripts aren’t 100% done yet, we must assume the series won’t make the late 2022 release the studio was originally gunning for. The news aren’t surprising though, as Glover has been quite busy with the last two seasons of Atlanta and other endeavors, one of which could be the long-anticipated Star Wars: Lando limited series for Disney Plus.

Erskine has also been making a splash on TV, with major roles in series such as PEN15Casual, and Insecure. We’ll be seeing her soon in a Star Wars production as well: the series centered around Obi-Wan Kenobi and his return to Jedi duties ten years after Revenge of the Sith. She has mentioned her part in a galaxy far, far away is small though.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a 2005 movie directed by Doug Liman and starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a married couple with a secret life — both partners are spies without the other one knowing about it. Francesca Sloane (Atlanta) will be credited as co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer on the series adaptation for Prime Video.
