Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ Assembles Entire Cast, Filming to Begin Next Month

Rebel Moon by Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder is preparing to shoot his new movie, Rebel Moon, and the cast has been assembled.

The story will revolve around “a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Belisarius.” The lead role will be played by Sofia Boutella, as we’ve known for a few months, a young woman with a mysterious past tasked with finding warriors from the neighboring planets to help them fight back.

This is according to The Hollywood Reporter, who said last month that, in addition to Boutella, the movie will include Djimon Hounsou as General Titus (though his allegiances are unclear at this point), Bae Doona as a nemesis proficient with a sword, Ray Fisher as the resistance fighter Blood Axe, and in yet-unknown roles, the movie will also include Charlie Hunnam, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang.

The latest two additions, per The Hollywood Reporter, and confirmed on Twitter by Zack Snyder himself, are Rupert Friend and Stuart Martin. Friend will be playing the main antagonist, gathering the enemy forces and confronting Boutella in action. THR‘s sources also say that Martin will be playing a villainous role, though they couldn’t provide more details.

Filming will take place between April and November, a long shoot given the fact that the movie is being approached as a two-parter. Snyder will receive directing credit, as well as “story by” and co-writing mentions. Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300) are also writers on the project, with Johnstad also receiving “story by” credit.

This will continue Snyder’s collaboration with Netflix, which already released his last movie, Army of the Dead, as well as a spin-off project, Army of Thieves, last year. They will also be expanding that universe with a prequel animated series that is currently in development. The first part of Rebel Moon could be released in 2023, but as always with Netflix, we won’t know for sure until a few weeks before the release.
