Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ To Be Led by Sofia Boutella
Zack Snyder will be back with another Netflix film after he signed an overall deal earlier this year.
According to Deadline, Sofia Boutella has been chosen to star in the new film, titled Rebel Moon. Snyder is directing and co-writing, along with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300). It’s based on an original story by Snyder and Johnstad. Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, and Zack Snyder are producing for The Stone Quarry, and Eric Newman is producing for Grand Electric.
Boutella is apparently the actress that came out on top of a casting process that lasted several months. She was handpicked by Zack Snyder himself, who was wowed by her audition. From Deadline, here’s the plot of the film:
The film is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.
Boutella was introduced to general audiences in a big way mid-2010s, via Kingsman: The Secret Service, in 2014, which then gave her the title role in Tom Cruise’s The Mummy (2017), and a supporting role in Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde. However, after Universal’s monster feature bombed, she has been out of the big Hollywood titles, and has landed less bombastic roles in films such as Hotel Artemis or Climax.
Zack Snyder is coming out of Army of the Dead, which launched an internal franchise at Netflix, with the spin-off Army of Thieves, which just debuted on the platform, plus a sequel titled Planet of the Dead, currently in development, and a Norse mythology animated TV series, Twilight of the Gods, currently in production.
He wants to start filming Rebel Moon as soon as possible, so more casting announcements could be coming soon, though the director is not known for working with huge Hollywood stars.
